Why the microSD card makes or breaks it

Almost none of these ship with a card, and the one you already own from your camera is the wrong tool. Dashcams write constantly, all day, in loop mode. A regular card burns out in months and starts corrupting clips right when you need them.

Night driving is where the cheap ones fall apart

Anybody can make a camera that looks fine at noon. The test is a dark two-lane road with oncoming headlights, and that is where the gap between an $80 unit and a $160 one shows up hard.

The screen itself matters here too, not just the camera. A dim panel that washes out under streetlights makes CarPlay maps hard to read, and glare off the glossy coating gets old fast on a night drive. Most portable combos run off the car’s 12V socket, which means they power down when you turn the car off. No power, no parking surveillance. A few offer a hardwire kit that taps a constant 12V line for parking mode, but that is an extra $20 and a fiddly install.

The processor is also splitting its attention. Running CarPlay mirroring and encoding video at the same time asks a lot of a cheap chip, and the budget units can stutter or drop a frame under load. Spend a little more and that mostly goes away.

If you can, buy from a seller with an easy return window and test the night footage in the first week. Drive a dark road, park behind a car at a light, and pull the clip on your computer. If you cannot read the plate, send it back before the window closes.
